Italian internunzio, from Latin internuntius, from inter- + nuntius messenger
The first known use of internuncio was in 1622
1 Father Roach, still officiating as internuncio, found the dowager less and less impracticable, and at length a treaty was happily concluded.
2 In the spring of 1788, the Austrian internuncio declined any further attempt at mediation, and hostilities between Russia and Turkey were renewed.
3 The disputants had called in the Austrian internuncio, but all diplomacy was vain.
