1 Shining black; the mandibles pale, ferruginous, with their inner margins finely denticulate; the eyes placed rather forwards on the sides of the head, the latter emarginate behind.

2 The gills are emarginate, adnexed, thin, white, in groups of 2–4.

3 Deeply notched cordiform tongues are found in P. leonhardschultzei and P. schmidtorum; with the exception of these two species, some individuals of all species have emarginate tongues.

4 Bill long as head, lamellæ exposed along projecting edge of upper mandible; tail of sixteen feathers, short and rounded; hind toe very small, outer shorter than third, centre rather long; interdigital membrane emarginate.

5 The gills are pale yellow, emarginate, slightly decurrent, somewhat crowded, and often tinged with red.

13 Petals.—Four to seven lines long; very broad; the upper deep purple, the others lilac, bluish, or white, veined with purple, with a yellowish base; the lateral bearded; the lowest emarginate.

14 The gills are rather thick, narrowed behind, emarginate or acutely adnate, sulphur-colored.

15 Of 32 adults examined, seven have the tongue shallowly notched posteriorly; in the others the tongue is emarginate.

16 DESCRIPTION.—The upper third of the outer margin of the ears deeply emarginate; colour of fur light brownish; ears and interfemoral membranes pale yellowish white; membranes dusky white.

17 Their ectocyst is stiff; they are emarginate at the tip and more or less distinctly furrowed on the dorsal surface, the keel in which the furrow runs not being prominent.

18 Skull: Broader, more angular and more nearly flat; zygomatic arches more widely spreading; zygomatic processes of maxillae heavier; posterior ends of nasals emarginate rather than rounded; upper incisors longer.

19 The zoœcia are cylindrical and as a rule obscurely emarginate and furrowed.

20 The gills are nearly free when young, then emarginate, somewhat crowded, rather thick, entire, white.
