New Latin, from Medieval Latin, currant, from Arabic rībās rhubarb
The first known use of ribes was in 1753
The common so-called “Zante currants” used in recipes such as soda bread are actually raisins, and they are no relation to the Ribes genus of currants and gooseberries.
De Ribes’ own designs - except for her elaborate costumes for balls, and the like - are simple.
The show also features a set of casual photos, several showing de Ribes engaging in sports.
Jean-Michel Ribes, the respected head of the Rond-Point theatre off the Champs Elysees, said he was irked by the president’s calls for the industry to “reinvent” itself.
And when the grandee passed away in 1996, the Countess de Ribes became her successor, bringing together the brightest and the best in the tradition of the French salon.
No one out-jousted de Ribes, and three of her costumes are in the show at the Met.
As her passion developed, Bonmati would wear her Ribes football kit to family gatherings rather than a dress.
He invited de Ribes to his atelier, and he was the first of many masters who dressed her.
Despite canceling her trip, however, de Ribes noted in a statement that she hopes the show “will represent the joy associated with the freedom of creation.”
For people like Ribes, who uses a wheelchair, that seems a remote possibility.
“Jacqueline de Ribes: The Art of Style” is a new show at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum which celebrates the young woman on the balcony and the grande dame she became.
It’s one of the few items that de Ribes did not change at all - however, she pairs it here with a dramatic “motoring veil,” meant to keep dust out of one’s face.
It raises the question of what, with unfettered ambition, de Ribes might have achieved.
It’s unclear what specifically will be announced to help people like Ribes and those who are boycotting.
De Ribes' own designs — except for her elaborate costumes for balls, and the like — are simple.
But Countess de Ribes remains the last of an almost extinct species: a cultured and educated woman who through her breeding and connections has made her greatest skill, bringing people together, a social art form.
An ambassador of elegance, especially in America, Countess de Ribes became a fan of the young Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s.
Six years ago, back at her first club of CD Ribes, there was no female team.
“We really want the games to be a success,” Ribes said in an Associated Press interview, but France needs “to press on the accelerator” because “a catastrophic scenario is in the offing if we don’t.”
