Latin parelion, from Greek parēlion, from para- + hēlios sun — more at solar
The first known use of parhelion was in 1571
It seemed as if the sun himself had been multiplied in order to add to the excessive brilliancy, for he was surrounded by parhelia, or sun-dogs as the men called them.
The weather became fairly thick soon after noon, and at the end of the afternoon there was considerable drift with a mist caused by ice crystals and parhelion.
Sometimes called a sun dog, its scientific name is a parhelion, and on this journey, both men have been stopped, mesmerized by them.
The day was calm, cloudy and misty in the forenoon and clearer in the afternoon, when we observed well-defined parhelia.
Also visible were a range of other effects, including parhelia - or sun dogs - which appear as bright patches either side of the sun.
Not only did the sun smile upon the scene, but two mock suns or parhelia, almost as bright as himself, shone on either side of him.
A very brilliant and clearly defined parhelion was visible at the time, and there were only a few light clouds.
Mock suns, or parhelia, are common appearances in northern skies.
And how her eyes sparkled as she said these words, like the parhelia in the glowing girdle of a solar halo!
It's easy to romanticize it but this provides a taste of the difficulty and two new vocabulary words: sastrugi and parhelion.
The central halo and three bright spots are the result of an optical phenomenon called a sun dog — or parhelion — which occurs when ice crystals in the atmosphere refract sunlight.
Sometimes during the summer we see the parhelion, a similar phenomenon of the sun.
Among the remarkable phenomena which came under the observation of the Jesuit Fathers in Mackinaw, was the appearance of a parhelion on the 21st of January, 1671.
At 5 a.m. a beautiful parhelion formed around the sun.
Sometimes 'mock suns' known as parhelia appear at certain points along the rings.
On the 16th March the same parhelion appeared, and was seen from three different places more than fifty leagues apart.
The same parhelion was seen on the island of Manitou in Lake Huron, and accompanied by a very remarkable appearance.
The optical phenomena which occur on the same side as, or around the sun, such as halos, parhelia, etc., will be dealt with later on.
Sundogs, or parhelia, as they are technically known, are caused by ice particles reflecting a diffused light.
For a few words of this class, however, there are double plurals in use; as, automata or atomatons, criteria or criterions, parhelia or parhelions; and the plural of phenomenon appears to be always phenomena.
