jac·a·mar
jae k mar
French, modification of Portuguese jacamacira, jacamarici, probably of Tupi-Guarani origin
The first known use of jacamar was in 1825
1 “It would be a good chance to taste jacamar,” answered the sailor, “if that fellow would only let himself be roasted.”
2 A bird called jacamar is often taken for a kingfisher, but it has no relationship to that tribe.
3 It was indeed a jacamar, of which the plumage shines with a metallic lustre.
4 "That must be a jacamar," said Herbert, trying to get nearer.
5 The smallest species of jacamar is very common in the dry savannas.

7 "This will be a good opportunity to taste jacamar," replied the sailor, "if that fellow is in a humor to be roasted!"
8 Early in January the jacamar is in fine plumage for the cabinet of the naturalist.
9 And there was I, in a yellow gown with green embroideries, gay as a jacamar, jarring hideously on myself.
10 In a moment a stone, adroitly aimed by the boy, struck the bird on the wing; but the jacamar took to his legs and disappeared in a minute.
11 The large jacamar is pretty common about two hundred miles up the River Demerara.
12 Among the characteristic members of the feathered tribe in these forests are the jacamars, as they are found in no other part of the world.
13 The little three-toed jacamar possesses a few of the brilliant hues which adorn his brethren.
14 But, beside these, insects for swallows, swifts, martins, shrikes, thrushes, orioles, sparrows, the beautiful trogans and jacamars, moles, shrews, hedgehogs, and a multitude of others, too numerous to mention, but not too numerous to eat.
15 "That must be a jacamar," said Herbert, trying to get nearer.
“那一定是啄木鸟,”赫伯特一面说,一面打算走近些。
16 The touracolories were better game than the jacamar, the flash of the latter being tough, but it would have been hard to persuade Pencroff that they had not killed the most delicious of birds.
17 The jacamar lives entirely on insects, but never goes in search of them.
18 There are four species of jacamar in Demerara; they are all beautiful; the largest, rich and superb in the extreme.
19 “That must be a jacamar,” said Herbert, trying to get within range of the bird.
20 The jacamars, which are clothed in plumage of the most beautiful golden-bronze and steel colours, are peculiar to tropical America.
