Cabot

1 Cabot made his way down the gravel road slowly, and after passing two houses on the right, realized that he’d forgotten to ask the grocery store kid which house belonged to Cullen Witter.

2 After a few minutes she opened the door, and as Cabot stood up to face her, she began to cry.

3 But he had, and now Cabot Searcy would face his second semester of college alone and without his friend.

4 “And one day,” Cabot said back, sitting down in the chair.

5 Cabot laughed when he read about the Lazarus Burger and laughed even louder when the article mentioned some woman giving woodpecker haircuts.

6 “I’m gonna need you to get back in the trunk now,” Cabot said with surprising calmness.

7 Cabot grinned at this, leaned close to his father’s right ear, and told him to wait and see.

8 Cabot asked, struggling to come up with a game plan.

9 But still, all Cabot could really think about was Alma, and more specifically, what he would like to do to the little punk she would be going out with that night.

10 “I’m an atheist,” Chuck said, lying simply to keep from having to hear any more of Cabot Searcy’s theories on the potential of humankind.

11 Cabot Searcy would not give up his “quest,” as he called it, for the truth behind modern human existence.

12 “You can’t just live off your uncle for the rest of your life, Cabot,” his father said.

13 It would be no time at all until Cabot wasn’t changing the world, but sitting alone in a jail cell with a bologna sandwich and a lidless toilet.

14 Cabot set it down on the floor next to the bed and continued to fold the sheets, stacking them neatly into the last box.

15 Of course, Cabot could barely read the name Lazarus without thinking about his Bible.

16 Three weeks into his stay, Gabriel asked Cabot Searcy where they were.

17 Cabot asked Benton on the last day of the semester.

18 Upon graduating with his degree in philosophy, Cabot Searcy was told by his father that he couldn’t have wasted more money or time if he’d tried.

19 “Richard,” Cabot’s mom whispered, glaring at her husband from across the table.

20 In his motel room, Cabot could hear the sound of clanks, bangs, and heavy motors outside as a crew tore down the motel’s existing sign to replace it with the new one.
