中古英语 bench,源自古英语 benc “长凳”,尤指没有靠背的凳子,源自原始日耳曼语 *bankon (也是古弗里斯兰语 bank “长凳”,古诺尔斯语 bekkr,丹麦语 bænk,中古荷兰语 banc,古高地德语 banch)。这个词族与 bank(名词2)“水体旁的天然土坡”有关,也许最初的概念是“用作座位的人造土堆”。
