1570年代,“供航海家使用的地图”,源自法语 charte “卡片,地图”,源自晚期拉丁语 charta “纸张,卡片,地图”(参见 card(n.1))。

Charte 是法语词汇在所有意义上的原始形式,但在14世纪之后(可能受到意大利同源词 carta 的影响), carte 开始取代它。英语在15世纪至17世纪使用 carte 和 card 来表示“图表,地图”,在17世纪, chart 可以表示“纸牌”,但这些词汇已经分道扬镳, chart 自此在“地图”意义上占主导地位。
