中古英语 shiften,源自古英语 sciftan, scyftan “安排,放置,整理”(现已过时),还有“分开,分离,分配,分享”(现已过时或地方用语),源自原始日耳曼语 *skiftan(源头还包括古诺尔斯语 skipta “分开,改变,分离”,古弗里西亚语 skifta “决定,确定,测试”,荷兰语 schiften “分开,转动”,德语 schichten “分类”, Schicht “班次”)。据说这与古英语 sceadan “分开,分离”(见 shed(v.))的源头有关。
